News from Berlin - Last Friday 11th April, Minister of State Maria Böhmer met the former Prime Minister of Lebanon Najib Mikati at the Federal Foreign Office for talks which will focus on the current refugee crisis in Syria.

There are currently one million refugees registered in Lebanon, which itself only has four million inhabitants, making it the country with the most refugees per inhabitant in the world.

As one of the core international donors, Germany has provided Lebanon with more than 100 million euros in assistance since 2012, in an attempt to stabilise the situation. Not only are the funds supposed to provide humanitarian aid to the refugees themselves, but the money is also being used to assist the Lebanese community, whose services such as water supply and healthcare have been financially stretched as a result of taking in refugees.

Böhmer also emphasized during the talks that the increasingly religious and political polarisation in the region, which is a direct result of the situation in Syria, must be acted upon. She added that tolerance and understanding were key to the long term peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
