On 4 November 2025, the Embassy of Mexico in Germany hosted Mexican Science Day — “Science connects: Mexico & Germany – Beyond Now”, an all-day forum held as part of Berlin Science Week. The event brought together a diverse audience of researchers, policymakers, artists, and students to explore scientific cooperation, innovation, and the societal implications of emerging technologies.

Organized jointly by the Mexican Embassy and the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), the forum was structured in two complementary segments. The morning and afternoon programmes focused on cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence, sustainability, and bilateral scientific cooperation, while the evening segment blended science communication with artistic performance. The format combined panels, roundtables, and a “science slam” designed for early-career researchers, fostering dialogue across disciplines, generations, and national perspectives.

Held at the Mexican Embassy’s residence in Berlin (Klingelhöferstraße 3), the event welcomed representatives from Humboldt University, major Mexican research institutions such as UNAM and the National Technological Institute of Mexico, German research organizations, funding bodies, as well as students and members of the public. Speakers addressed key topics including how AI can support climate resilience, education, and democratic governance, and how bilateral scientific projects can align with global priorities such as sustainability and equitable innovation.

Beyond the formal panels, Mexican Science Day illustrated the power of scientific diplomacy: leveraging shared knowledge and research networks to strengthen bilateral ties, build trust, and create tangible cooperation opportunities. The event highlighted collaborative problem-solving in areas such as food systems, renewable energy, and disaster mitigation, and offered networking moments, including funding-oriented sessions and pitches for follow-up workshops in Mexico. In doing so, the embassy positioned science as both a policy instrument and a connector of people.

The inclusion of an artistic performance in the programme further emphasized the interplay between science and culture. By combining scientific discourse with creative and performative practices, the event made technical topics accessible to a wider audience and underscored the evolving nature of diplomacy — increasingly situated at the intersection of research, culture, and public engagement.

In sum, Mexican Science Day 2025 showcased how a Latin American embassy can leverage its convening power in Berlin to foster durable partnerships, highlight national research strengths, and invite German counterparts into forward-looking collaborative projects. The event exemplifies modern diplomacy: taking place as much in seminar rooms and poster sessions as in formal receptions, and demonstrating that science, like culture, is a versatile language for building international relationships.
