Visit to Japan to celebrate Germany's National Day at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai
June 23rd, 2025A German delegation visited Japan on June 19 to celebrate Germany's National Day at Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai. On this occasion, the Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, met with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during an evening meeting.
The meeting provided an opportunity for Prime Minister Ishiba to express his gratitude to Federal President Steinmeier for his significant contribution to the development of Japanese-German relations, particularly in key areas such as business, science, and multi-faceted governance.
Prime Minister Ishiba emphasized Germany's role as a leading European nation that shares common values with Japan and is a vital partner in tackling global challenges. In turn, President Steinmeier noted that his frequent visits to Japan underscored the significance of the bilateral partnership, describing Japan as “a like-minded country that, among other things, supports the rule of law.”
During the meeting, the topics of regional issues were discussed, including the Indo-Pacific and the situation in Ukraine, along with NATO cooperation. The discussion aimed to further strengthen bilateral relations. Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation on security, as Germany continues to expand its engagement in the Indo-Pacific. Federal President Steinmeier and Prime Minister Ishiba expressed hope for advancing intellectual and human exchange through different initiatives, such as friendship cities and activities at the Japan-German Center in Berlin. They further committed to enhancing collaboration in economics, science, and technology, including through opportunities presented by the Osaka-Kansai Expo.
The delegation's visit to Japan and the evening meeting reflected both nations’ commitment to sustaining and strengthening their long-standing bilateral relations. Germany and Japan will therefore continue to work closely together across a range of areas.
