Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Netherlands Deepen Bilateral Cooperation in Berlin
Dutch Ambassador Hester Somsen meets State Secretary Jutta Bieringer
March 12th, 2026On February 2, 2026 state Secretary Jutta Bieringer, serving as the official Plenipotentiary of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to the German federal government, welcomed Hester Somsen, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Germany, at the state’s official representation office in Berlin, the Vertretung des Landes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern beim Bund. The meeting, held with the support of the Dutch Embassy, provided a platform to strengthen bilateral cooperation in economic exchange, tourism, maritime development, and the renewable energy transition.
The officials discussed ways to expand bilateral economic relations between Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern and the Netherlands. Both sides emphasized the role of cross‑border trade and investment, noting that the Netherlands is among Germany’s most significant trading partners within the European Union and a key export market for German products. Discussions included opportunities for regional firms in Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern to connect with Dutch partners in logistics, advanced manufacturing and digital services. The partners also exchanged perspectives on tourism cooperation, agreeing on the importance of promoting the Baltic Sea coast as a destination for Dutch travellers. The Netherlands consistently ranks among the top international source markets for Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, contributing substantially to annual visitor numbers and overnight stays.
Discussions further addressed the maritime economy and offshore wind supply chains, areas where both regions see mutual benefit. Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, has developed key capabilities in wind energy installation and maritime services along the Baltic Sea. Representatives highlighted the role of the Port of Rostock and surrounding industrial networks in supporting offshore wind logistics, fabrication and maintenance activities. Ambassador Somsen noted opportunities for Dutch firms with maritime logistics expertise, particularly those linked to operations in the Port of Rotterdam, to engage with projects in German Baltic ports. These discussions extended to shared interests in sustainable shipping, port digitalization and workforce development exchange.
Renewable energy transition was a central theme of the meeting. Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern has become a leading region in Germany for renewable electricity generation, particularly through wind energy, and recently has produced more electricity than it consumes domestically, exporting surplus power to other federal states. Both German and Dutch officials identified the expansion of offshore wind capacity in the North Sea and Baltic Sea as priority areas for deeper cooperation. Delegates also discussed partnership potential in green hydrogen infrastructure and trade. The Netherlands has advanced plans for green hydrogen hubs linked to its major ports, offering potential pathways for joint innovation in electrolysis, storage and distribution systems that could benefit industrial clusters in Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern.
The meeting in Berlin reflects the continued engagement of the Dutch Embassy and the government of Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern in strengthening regional cooperation on economic development, tourism promotion, maritime industry linkages and renewable energy transition. Ambassador Somsen, who has served in Germany since 2024, and State Secretary Bieringer emphasized the mutual interest in advancing cooperative initiatives that support sustainable growth and deepen bilateral ties between the Netherlands and Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern.
