Maximiliano Soto: Chilean Composer Triumphs in Europe
“Why me? I come from a culture that has never even believed that composing is a profession”
March 06th, 2025Maximiliano Soto is a talented Chilean composer who has found in Europe the perfect setting to develop his musical career. He has managed to establish himself in the competitive world of classical music in Europe, winning awards such as the prestigious Busoni Prize of the Berlin Academy of Arts (Akademie der Künste). The 33-year-old Chilean composer has become the first Spanish-speaker to receive this award. His story is an inspiring example for other migrant artists seeking to develop their careers in Europe.
The decision to migrate to Europe was driven by the search for better career opportunities, and with the support of his wife, Soto moved to Germany in 2016. In an interview for the Embassy of Chile in Germany, Soto has assured that his arrival was far from easy: “When we arrived in Freiburg we didn't have a penny. We lived in a house that was infested with spiders and I worked cleaning the rubbish in an old people's home”. Despite initial difficulties, including temporary jobs and precarious living conditions, Soto persevered with his musical training. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg and was selected for the Konzertexamen programme. His dedication and talent eventually led him to be recognised by the Südwestrundfunk Symphonieorchester (SWR) and to win the Busoni Prize.
His participation in international festivals and the publication of his works by renowned publishers have been key to his rise. The composer has premiered more than 55 works in countries such as Mexico, the UK, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Japan and South Korea. His success is not only a personal achievement, but also an example of how culture and art can open doors and create opportunities for artists from all over the world.
