From 30 April to 20 June 2025, the Mexican Embassy in Berlin will host 'Algas (Algae)', an exhibition by visual artist Mariana Gullco. The event, organised in collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Institute in Germany, presents a series of works that invite us to reflect on the inextricable relationship between nature and man-made waste

Mariana Gullco is a renowned Argentinean visual artist with a strong influence on Mexican culture. Her time at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and her numerous exhibitions in different galleries and cultural centres in the country have allowed her to create a critical art. His career has been marked by a constant concern for environmental issues. In his previous projects he has addressed questions of sustainability, the relationship between man and the natural environment, and the limits of human intervention in the landscape. Algas (Algae)' is part of this body of work and reinforces his artistic commitment to ecological awareness through an accessible and provocative visual language.

Using a variety of artistic techniques, Gullco achieves a striking visual representation of the tension between the natural environment and human pollution. His approach is both critical and playful, allowing the viewer to question the apparent inseparability of nature and waste. Each work not only highlights the inherent beauty of natural materials, but also, denounces the persistent presence of plastic waste in fragile ecosystems.

The exhibition is open to the public Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 16:30 by prior appointment at kimale@sre.gob.mx The artist will be exhibiting a selection of drawings, prints, embroidery, textiles and photographs that reflect the interaction between seaweed and plastic waste collected off the Scottish coast in 2024 and 2025.
