Man bindet uns: Danish Wartime Songs of WWII
A commemorative concert by Die Goldvögel at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on April 9
April 07th, 2025In Denmark, April 9th 1940, is remembered as the beginning of the Nazi occupation. To commemorate this dramatic occasion, the Danish Embassy in Germany has invited the group Die Goldvögel to perform songs that were secretly composed by Danish musicians during World War II.
During the Nazi occupation of Denmark, the regime banned all forms of dissent. In response, artists of the time developed a poetic language that concealed the Danish people's yearning for freedom behind seemingly innocent words.
Die Goldvögel will honour this Danish tradition with a concert on April 9th at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. The ensemble features Mads Elung-Jensen, Paolo de Jesus Maido, Carlo Dayyani, and Tal Balshai.
The program will be introduced by Tore Leifer, journalist and director of the Danish National Museum at Frederiksborg Castle. Leifer's speech will focus on Poul Henningsen, a key figure of the intellectual resistance during the occupation.
Through the music born in that dark chapter of history, the event aims to invite reflectio on dramatic events of the Nazi occupation, keeping alive the memory of a people's resilience and hope.
