MaerzMusik 2016, Explores the Theme ‘Temporality of Music’
From 11th to 20th of March, the Berlinale Festspiele Will Host MaerzMusik, a Festival Committed to Exploring the Phenomenon of Time under Various Aspects.
February 12th, 2016MaerzMusik has envolved from a festival for contemporary music to a “festival for time issues”, dedicated to exploring the phenomenon of time in its socio-political, philosophical and artistic dimensions.
Owing to its tradition as a festival for contemporary compositions, MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues focuses on the temporality of music. A broad range of orchestral and chamber music, innovative musical theatre, experimental works and media art provide a rich panorama of contemporary music.
The first edition of this festival was launched on 20th March 2015 at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele with the large-scale “Liquid Room” project, a four-hour concert format involving both performance and installation, developed by Belgian Ensemble Ictus. This format broke up the conventional concert timeframe, and replaced the fourth wall of the concert hall with an ensemble of four stages between which both audience and sounds could move freely.
Regarding this second edition, the MaerzMusik 2016 imagines the Digital Universe as the birthplace of new forms of time – digital times, as it were, that shape our lives increasingly. The programme of the festival will be presented by established artists and young newcomers from all over the world and will include premières and new productions too.
The Festival will be opened with the “Time and the Digital Universe” conference, a weeklong discourse format dedicated to exploring such time issues, and it will end with “The Long Now”, the grand closing event of the MaerzMusik, that includes concerts, performances, electronic live-acts and sound and video installations to form a composition in space and time.
