From May 9 to June 6, 2025, several Latin American embassies in Vienna joined forces to celebrate Semana de la Lucha Libre, a cultural program centered around the rich world of Latin American wrestling. At the heart of the celebration was El arte de luchar (The Art of Fighting), an exhibition hosted by the Austrian Institute for Latin America (LAI) that looked at lucha libre as more than just sport—it’s also performance, identity, and storytelling.

Curated by Mexican artist Miguel Valverde, the exhibition featured photography, painting, fashion pieces, and digital installations. Each piece explored the emotions and symbolism behind the mask, the fighter, and the spectacle that lucha libre represents for many across Latin America.

The opening event on May 15 brought a packed audience to the Frida Kahlo Hall at LAI, where José J. Arriaga—known in the wrestling world as Cinta de Oro—spoke about his life in the ring and shared parts of his autobiography, El Verdadero Campeonato. His reflections brought a personal perspective to a tradition often seen only from the outside.

The month also featured film screenings, like Luchadoras: mujeres que resisten desde el ring, shown on May 12 at Filmcasino Vienna. Workshops titled La magia de la lucha libre invited attendees to explore movement, mask-making, and the deeper meanings behind the spectacle.

Events like this are a reminder of how cultural traditions can open up new conversations. By bringing lucha libre into galleries, cinemas, and classrooms, the embassies created a space where art, history, and everyday stories could meet—and where audiences in Austria could connect with Latin America in a fresh and engaging way.
