In Berlin, Lithuania’s National Day was marked on 11 March 2026 with a diplomatic gathering that carried both symbolic and political significance. As guests convened at the Representation of the State of Hesse, the anniversary of independence served as a reminder of Lithuania’s historical resilience and its active role in addressing today’s European security challenges.

The evening was opened by Dr. Katharina Brauer, Head of the Representation of the State of Hesse to the Federal Government, who welcomed guests and underlined the importance of European cooperation and dialogue. The event provided a formal setting for exchange, among diplomats and officials in the German capital.

In his address, Giedrius Puodžiūnas, Ambassador of Lithuania to Germany, reflected on the 36th anniversary of Lithuania’s independence, restored in 1990. He spoke about current geopolitical challenges, particularly the war in Ukraine, and emphasised the importance of solidarity, security as well as support among European partners. The event gathered representatives from the field of diplomacy and politics offering an opportunity for both formal remarks and informal discussions. In a shifting European landscape, such meetings support continued dialogue and reinforce working relationships between diplomatic and political actors.

Beyond diplomacy and politics, Lithuania’s National Day also provides an opportunity to reflect on the country’s economic and technological progress. Over the past decades, Lithuania has strengthened sectors that define its modern economy, including biotechnology, which contributes approximately 2.7% of GDP and is expected to reach 5% by 2030, with a large share destined for export. This growth illustrates the country’s ability to turn innovation into practical, market-ready solutions, reinforcing Lithuania’s position as a competitive and forward-looking European nation

The celebration reaffirmed Lithuania’s role as a committed partner within the European and transatlantic community. Against the backdrop of current geopolitical challenges, the event highlighted the enduring importance of solidarity, dialogue, and coordinated action among allies.
