The Ambassador
Amb. Tšiu Khathibe
H.E. Mr. Tšiu Khathibe is a dedicated career diplomat and senior administrator from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations of the Kingdom of Lesotho. He assumed his duties as the Permanent Representative in Geneva bringing a strong technical and strategic background in international relations, public administration, and economic development.
Prior to his ambassadorial deployment to Switzerland, Ambassador Khathibe held key positions within the central government in Maseru, where he specialized in regional integration within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and coordinated international development assistance. Known for his analytical approach to multilateral diplomacy, he has consistently advocated for the structural transformation of small economies, the creation of fair trade pathways for African nations, and increased international support for climate change adaptation in Southern Africa.
History
Lesotho’s diplomatic strategy in International Geneva is profoundly shaped by its unique geography as a mountainous enclave and its economic status, making it highly vulnerable to global trade fluctuations and environmental shifts.
The Permanent Mission in Geneva serves as Lesotho’s primary link to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations Human Rights Council. Historically, the mission’s core mandates focus heavily on advocating for the trade rights of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), securing climate financing for mountain ecosystems, and promoting public health initiatives. Because Lesotho is a critical regional water exporter (often dubbed the "Water Tower" of Southern Africa) but suffers from acute climate-induced droughts, the mission actively collaborates with environmental and meteorological agencies in Geneva to address global warming, while simultaneously fighting for fair access to global markets for small-scale agricultural and textile exports.
