Embassy Events, Culture and Ideas in Summer 2026

Berlin’s Latin American diplomatic and cultural scene is particularly lively in the summer months. From national-day celebrations and community gatherings to academic discussions, concerts and exhibitions, July and August 2026 offer several opportunities to experience Latin American culture and connect with the region’s diplomatic, academic and diaspora communities.
While some events are organized directly by embassies, others take place at Berlin’s Ibero-American Institute (IAI), one of the city’s most important institutions for Latin American cultural and intellectual exchange. The IAI describes its programme as encompassing lectures, discussions, concerts, exhibitions, film screenings and other cultural events, both in Berlin and online.
Colombia celebrates its national day in Berlin
One of the most significant Latin American diplomatic events of July was Colombia’s National Day celebration on 15 July 2026. The Embassy of Colombia in Germany and its Consular Section in Berlin organized the event with support from Colombia Nos Une, the Colombian Foreign Ministry’s programme for Colombians abroad.
Held at UFA Fabrik in Berlin-Tempelhof, the celebration marked the 216th anniversary of Colombian independence. The programme included an official opening, Colombian artistic and cultural performances, traditional food and opportunities for members of the Colombian diaspora and partner organizations to connect. The embassy also presented its institutional recognition of the Colombian diaspora in Germany.
The event illustrates the broader role played by Latin American embassies in Berlin. National-day celebrations are not simply diplomatic occasions; they also provide opportunities for communities abroad to maintain cultural connections while introducing German institutions and the wider public to the countries they represent.
Mexico: culture, community and the Mexican Embassy
Mexico is another particularly visible presence in Berlin's cultural landscape. The Embassy of Mexico in Germany, based in Berlin, regularly combines diplomatic work with cultural and community programming. Its current public programme includes a free information day on 28 August 2026 dedicated to the experiences of binational families in Germany.
The event, taking place at the Mexican Embassy on Klingelhöferstraße 3, will run from 9:30 to 16:00. Its programme includes a documentary screening, talks and discussions about family, school and community life, participatory workshops focusing on resilience, parenting and identity, as well as opportunities for participants to meet and exchange experiences. The programme will also include Mexican food and an online option via YouTube. Admission is free.
The event demonstrates another important dimension of embassy activity: supporting diaspora communities and addressing practical and social questions that arise from living between cultures.
Latin American ideas at the Ibero-American Institute
For those interested in the political, economic and intellectual history of Latin America, the Ibero-American Institute offers several upcoming events.
On 27 August, political scientist Stefano Palestini will give a Spanish-language lecture titled La teoría de la dependencia como teoría multiescalar: Una nueva mirada a la obra de Osvaldo Sunkel, Aníbal Quijano y Milton Santos. The event examines dependency theory through the work of three influential Latin American thinkers and takes place from 17:00 to 18:30. It is available both in person and online.
The lecture is particularly relevant for anyone interested in Latin American political economy, development, international relations or the intellectual history of the region.
Tango arrives in Berlin
The cultural programme becomes more musical on 29 August, when the Ibero-American Institute hosts Tango Noir mit dem Colombo Kociołek Frontini Trio.
The concert begins at 20:30 and offers a distinctly Argentine cultural dimension to the summer programme. The trio performs with bandoneon and other instruments associated with the tango tradition.
For visitors who are less interested in academic lectures and more interested in experiencing Latin American culture through music, this is one of the most attractive upcoming events.
Brazilian comics take the spotlight
Brazilian culture will also have a prominent presence in Berlin from 31 August to 2 October, when the Ibero-American Institute presents Quadrinhos! – Brasilianische Comics in Berlin.
The exhibition focuses on Brazilian comics and is presented in German and Portuguese. It provides an opportunity to explore Brazilian visual culture and the country's comic-book tradition beyond the better-known international images of Brazil.
The extended exhibition period makes it particularly accessible for Berlin residents and visitors who cannot attend a single-day event.
Looking ahead to September
The Latin American programme continues into September.
On 8 September, the Ibero-American Institute will host Die USA und Lateinamerika: Von der Monroe- zur „Donroe“-Doktrin. The German-language lecture, from 18:00 to 20:00, examines relations between the United States and Latin America through the historical framework of the Monroe Doctrine and its contemporary interpretations.
On 17 September, the institute will turn to literature and migration with On both shores at once: Literarische Verortungspraktiken lateinamerikanischer Migrantinnen in den USA. The lecture will examine how Latin American migrant women in the United States negotiate literary and cultural belonging.
Further events are scheduled for October and November, including a discussion of presidentialism in North and South America on 22 October and a lecture on democracy in the Americas on 19 November.
A growing Latin American cultural network
Taken together, these events show that Latin American engagement in Berlin extends well beyond formal diplomacy. Embassies provide an important platform for national celebrations, diaspora engagement and bilateral relations, while institutions such as the Ibero-American Institute create a broader space for academic debate, literature, music, exhibitions and cultural exchange.
For Berliners interested in Latin America, the end of summer therefore offers several different ways to participate: a community-focused event at the Mexican Embassy, a Spanish-language discussion of Latin American economic thought, an evening of tango, and a longer-running exhibition dedicated to Brazilian comics.
The result is a diverse summer programme that reflects the breadth of Latin America itself — from Colombia’s national identity and Mexico’s binational communities to Argentina’s tango tradition, Brazil’s visual culture and the region’s continuing debates about politics, economics, migration and identity.
