Korean Ambassador to Vienna attended the first Anniversary Celebration of the Opening of the Korean Cultural Centre in Austria

A year of successful cultural exchange and ‘Korean Wave’ enthusiasm was commemorated

On May 16, 2024, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Vienna Ham Sang-wook attended the first anniversary celebration of the opening of a Korean Cultural Centre in Austria.

In his congratulatory speech, Ambassador Ham celebrated the Korean Cultural Centre and highlighted the fact that the Centre is located in Vienna, one of the European Capitals of Culture and one of the European cities where Korean artists are most active. The Hon. Ambassador praised the Korean Cultural Centre for its significant role in promoting cultural exchanges between Korea and Austria through various activities such as exhibitions, performances, Korean language classes, and support for K-pop groups over the past year. He also called for continued efforts to enhance mutual understanding between the two countries through cultural exchanges.

Furthermore, Dr. Nicolaus Keller, Head of the Northeast Asia Division of the Austrian Foreign Ministry, stated that Austria, a cultural powerhouse, places great importance on the cultural aspect of diplomatic relations and warmly welcomed the first anniversary of the establishment of the Korean Cultural Centre in Austria, a rising cultural powerhouse. Dr. Keller further emphasized that, in addition to the existing active exchanges between Korea and Austria in the field of classical art, the so-called ‘New Korean Wave (Hallyu)’, including K-pop, is being greatly appreciated in Austria as well.

The opening ceremony included congratulatory speeches from dignitaries from both Korea and Austria, followed by a welcoming speech from Cultural Centre Director Lim Jin-hong, and a video presentation showcasing the achievements of the Centre over the past year. The event featured traditional Korean music played on the daegeum, a bamboo flute, and janggu, the Korean drum, accompanied by traditional dances and a Schubert piano performance, harmoniously showcasing the cultures of both countries.
