The Embassy of State of Israel in Germany held the reception in honor of this event on Thursday evening 19th of May. Amb. Yakov Hadas-Handelsman welcomed the guests and held the speech. Among other things he spoke about German-Israel relations which significantly improved in past decades.

The ambassador also mentioned that both sides should always pay attention to the young generation as they are an important part of integration. The guest of honor was the songwriter Wolf Biermann, who during his speech performed the song and spoke about his long-term connection with Israel and love for this country.

Among the guests were numerous celebrities from politics, media, culture and religion, such as the Israeli Deputy Defense Minister Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan, head of the Presidential Office, Secretary of State David Gil, head of the Berlin Senate Chancellery, Björn Böhning etc.

The Independence Day of the State of Israel is the main State Holiday, which is celebrated in memory of the proclamation of the State of Israel, May 14th 1948.On this day 67 years ago, for about 8 hours before the end of the British Mandate in Palestine the Declaration of Independence of Israel was signed, and David Ben-Gurion (later the 1st Prime Minister) announced the creation of the State of Israel. Relations in different fields have been progressively improving between Germany and Israel in past fifty years.

Many politicians agree that it is a miracle how these two countries were able to put behind the past and move forward to mutual cooperation. There is a large Jewish community in Germany, according to the Embassy of the State of Israel more than 10000 Jews live in Capital city only.
