The Irish Embassy presents a special event as part of the celebration for St. Patrick’s Weekend
March 21st, 2025The Embassy of Ireland in Berlin celebrated St. Patrick’s Weekend (March 15th–17th) by supporting the Irish Film Berlin Festival together with IFI International programme, Screen Ireland and Culture Ireland. This initiative aims to showcase films, documentaries, and shorts on the visual arts, with a special focus on Northern Ireland.
St. Patrick’s Day was marked by several celebrations across Germany, with different events taking place throughout the country. As part of these festivities, the Embassy of Ireland in Berlin supported the Irish Film Berlin Festival.
On Saturday, March 15th, the festival opened with a selection of short films, all aiming to inspire reflection on art, memory, and humanity. Some of the screened titles included Imogen From the Heart (with director Emile Dinneen in attendance) and The Memories of Others (followed by a Q&A session with the daughter of Japanese photographer Akihiko Okamura).
The day also featured screenings of U2: From the Sky Down – the first documentary to open the Toronto International Film Festival in 2011. The program also included the screening of Kneecap, a comedy-drama on the Irish hip-hop trio from Belfast. The film made history as the first Irish-language feature to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 18, 2024, where it won the NEXT Audience Award. Additionally, Kneecap received six nominations at the 78th British Academy Film Awards.
On Monday, the program continued with screenings of The Irish Question, Breakfast on Pluto, and The Flats.
