With Ireland's rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union on the horizon, seventeen student journalists from Germany, Ireland, and Cyprus gathered in Berlin for an intensive programme of workshops, briefings, and media training designed to prepare them to report on one of the EU's most consequential institutional moments.

The event, Newsroom Europe 2026, was organised in partnership by European Movement Ireland, the Europäische Akademie Berlin, and the Goethe Institute Cyprus. Aisling Brady, Head of Communications at European Movement Ireland, joined the delegation in Berlin, welcoming the initiative as an opportunity to equip the next generation of journalists with the tools to cover EU affairs with depth and rigour.

Set within the historic Europäische Akademie Berlin, an  institution dedicated to European political education and training, participants received high-level expert input across a range of disciplines. Johanna Fölkel led a session on disinformation, Frank Burgdörfer guided the group through the intricacies of negotiation, and Mia Stremme, journalist with The New Federalist, provided hands-on media training.

The delegation then visited Europäisches Haus Berlin, where Thilo Kunzemann, Press Officer at the European Parliament Liaison Office in Berlin, offered an institutional briefing. Georgios Stravrinos, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Germany, also addressed the group, a timely contribution given that Cyprus currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU.

European Movement Ireland extended particular thanks to Sofia Eleftheriadi, Alina Gosch, Malin Raaf, and the wider team at the Europäische Akademie Berlin for their work in bringing the programme together. The delegation is now expected to visit Dublin in the coming period, with participants set to publish their reporting through The New Federalist.
