International Museum Day

Many museums in Berlin will open their doors for special tours and activities on 22 May 2016

International Museum Day is a worldwide event aims to raise awareness of museums' contributions to society and culture. In Berlin many museums open their doors for special tours and activities at 22 May 2016.

Every year since 1978 the worldwide community of museums has celebrated the International Museum Day. Organized by the International Council of Museums ICOM, the event highlights the role of museums in enriching society, promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding among peoples. In 2015, more than 35,000 museums participated in the event in about 145 countries.

Under the patronage of the President of the Federal Assembly (Bundesrat), museums in Berlin and all over Germany celebrate the International Museum Day with special events and guided tours, workshops and talks. Visitors are invited to discover the diverse collections and its gems and to learn about their cultural significance. The theme of International Museum Day 2016 is “Museums and cultural landscapes”. This day to be held using the slogan: "Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples". International Museum Day can express confidence that the annual International Museum Day will help to increase the role played by the museum which uses the universal language of the original object in order to develop international understanding.
