International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations at the UN in Vienna
Promoting unity and mutual respect through the Global Civilization Initiative framework.

On June 10, 2026, the international community observed the International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations, an initiative established by a 2024 United Nations General Assembly resolution proposed by China and 82 other nations. A central commemorative event took place in Vienna, co-hosted by the Permanent Mission of China and the United Nations Office at Vienna, bringing together over 300 representatives from international organizations and various countries. This observance highlights the growing importance of cultural diplomacy in addressing contemporary global challenges such as division and the "trust gap".
During the celebrations, Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a video address emphasizing the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), which calls for civilizations to coexist in harmony. The GCI aims to transcend notions of "civilizational superiority" and "clash of civilizations" by advocating for equality and mutual respect. Ambassador Li Song noted that the GCI has transitioned from a grand vision into "vibrant practices," providing momentum for building a "community with a shared future for humanity".
China’s approach to civilizational dialogue includes practical measures such as visa-free policies to facilitate direct people-to-people exchanges. Furthermore, the framework encourages the use of modern technologies, including artificial intelligence and social media, to empower cross-cultural learning and innovation. These efforts are designed to help nations share governance experiences while pursuing unique paths to modernization and addressing common challenges.
The Vienna event showcased cultural diplomacy through the "Blossoms of Civilizations" Chinese Painting Exhibition, which illustrated the GCI’s principles through art. Participants at the event commended China’s leadership in fostering these exchanges, noting the role of international platforms like UNESCO and the UN Alliance of Civilizations in maintaining global partnerships.
The 2026 International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations underscores a commitment to bridging global divides through communication and solidarity. By advocating for both heritage protection and innovative dialogue mechanisms, the initiative seeks to transform the global landscape into a "garden" of diverse, flourishing civilizations.
