As it has done since its first edition in 2001, the International literature festival in Berlin - the ilb - will bring together writers, as well as readers from all over the world during an 11-day multi-faceted cultural event.

The ilb main venue is Haus der Berliner Festspiele, and alternative locations are the Museum für Naturkunde in Mitte, the silent green Kulturquartier in Wedding and the aquarium in Kreuzberg.

For 11 days, Berlin will serve as a platform to present contemporary works in various literary forms, such as: prose, poetry, non-fiction, graphic novels, children’s and young adult literature. The ilb offers its participants the chance to engage in debates on current relevant topics as, in addition to readings, ilb authors will also give accounts of the political, social and cultural situations in their countries of origin.

This year’s edition will feature around 200 guests, both prominent writers and writers who are less well known, coming from over 50 countries. The program of the 18th edition will gravitate around five main topics.

The first one, “Decolonizing Worlds,” will address issues of colonialism, neo-colonialism and decolonization as well as processes of mental colonization.

The second topic, Nature Writing, will enable discussions around the question of nature writing in the context of the geo-climate challenges of our times.

The third main topic, The Art of Cooking, is dedicated to literature dealing with cooking and eating in a scientific, political and cultural context, tackling the challenges of globally oriented food consumption as well as sustainable farming methods and forms of nutrition.

The Politics of Drugs, the fourth main topic, will enable a historical retrospection of drugs’ perception and political treatment.

Last but not least, The Evolution of Human Culture is meant to provide an insight on the foundation of human culture, from the evolution of consciousness and intelligence in the animal kingdom, early human cultural heritage to foundations of aesthetic perception.
