Ibero-American Institute in Berlin Hosts International Conference on Latin America
Scholars Examine Democracy and Transregional Cooperation

The Ibero-American Institute (IAI) in Berlin recently hosted an international conference bringing together researchers, academics and specialists from Europe and Latin America to discuss democratic challenges and transregional cooperation. The event highlighted Berlin’s role as an important platform for intercultural dialogue and international exchange.
Held from 18 to 20 June 2026 at the Simón Bolívar Hall of the Ibero-American Institute, the conference “Democracies Under Siege: Latin America from a Transregional Perspective” was organised in cooperation with the German Association for Research on Latin America (ADLAF). Participants examined political, social and cultural developments across the region.
The conference welcomed scholars working in German, Spanish, Portuguese and English, reflecting the multilingual and international nature of contemporary academic cooperation. Discussions focused on democratic resilience, political participation, social inequalities and the role of civil society in strengthening democratic institutions.
Beyond academic debate, the event demonstrated the importance of cultural and intellectual diplomacy. By creating a space for dialogue between European and Latin American experts, the Ibero-American Institute continues to strengthen international understanding and foster long-term cooperation between regions.
The conference underlined Berlin’s significance as a centre for global cultural relations and highlighted how academic institutions contribute to intercultural exchange beyond traditional diplomatic channels.
