From March 4 to 12, 2025, the Instituto Cervantes in Vienna hosted the Ibero-American Film Week, a vibrant cultural event showcasing films from Latin America, Spain, and the Caribbean. The event, offering free access with English subtitles, gathered an engaged audience eager to explore the region’s rich cultural tapestry and contemporary social realities through cinema.

Organized by the Instituto Cervantes Vienna, the festival was supported by the embassies of El Salvador, Peru, and Guatemala, underscoring the close diplomatic and cultural ties between Ibero-American countries and Austria. The collaboration also included the Festival de Cine Africano de Tarifa (FCAT) from Spain, highlighting the diverse influences shaping Latin American culture.

The program opened with the Peruvian film Deliciosa fruta seca, setting the tone for a week dedicated to storytelling and reflection. A special segment titled Transatlántidas: La tercera raíz africana explored the African heritage’s impact on Latin American cinema, featuring works from the Dominican Republic and Cuba. The Guatemalan film Pol also featured prominently, offering viewers a unique narrative from Central America. The week concluded with the Salvadoran film El suspiro del silencio, leaving audiences with a profound sense of the region’s cinematic and cultural depth.

The festival not only provided an artistic platform but also served as a bridge for cultural diplomacy, enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation between Austria and Ibero-American countries. Events like these deepen international relations by highlighting shared histories, contemporary challenges, and creative expressions.

In this spirit, the Ibero-American Film Week stands as an example of how cultural exchange can strengthen diplomatic bonds, foster dialogue, and promote diversity in a globalized world.
