On March 24th, 2026, with a distinguished group of guests in attendance, the Greek Embassy  in Berlin marked the Greek Independence Day, commemorating the country’s historic path to sovereignty and its enduring place in Europe. The event brought together diplomats, officials, and members of the public in a setting that combined remembrance with contemporary dialogue.

The Greek Independence Day, celebrated annually on March 25, marks the beginning of the War of Independence in 1821, when Greek revolutionaries rose against the Ottoman Empire. The anniversary remains a central moment of national identity, symbolizing the pursuit of self-determination, resilience, and cultural continuity.

The Berlin gathering reflected both the historical significance of the day and the evolving role of Greece within the European and international community. The event was addressed by Alexandros Papaioannou, Ambassador of Greece to Germany, and Gunther Krichbaum, Germany’s Minister of State for European Affairs. Their remarks emphasized the importance of historical memory alongside continued cooperation across European political and diplomatic frameworks.

Beyond the formal commemorations, the evening unfolded as a space for conversation. A  reminder that such occasions are as much about exchange as they are about memory, offering a setting where relationships are quietly reinforced.

In Berlin, the anniversary took on a broader meaning. It was not only a look back at Greece’s path to independence, but also a moment to recognise how that history continues to shape its place in Europe today.
