Greek Ambassador in Berlin Commemorates Sachsenhausen Victims
Memorial plaque unveiled for Greek prisoners near Berlin
April 21st, 2026More than 670 Greek prisoners of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp were commemorated during events marking the 81st anniversary of the camp’s liberation near Berlin. The ceremony was attended by the Greek Ambassador to Germany, Alexandros Papaioannou, who honoured the memory of the Greek detainees who were imprisoned and perished at the site.
On the margins of the central commemorations, the Ambassador, together with the Greek Consul in Berlin, Ilias Klouvatos, unveiled a memorial plaque dedicated to the Greek prisoners of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, located north of Berlin. The ceremony was accompanied by a musical performance by the ensemble “Polyphonia,” which framed the tribute within a commemorative setting.
Following the unveiling, Ambassador Papaioannou, accompanied by the Defence Attaché of the Greek Embassy, Colonel Athanasios Koronis, laid a wreath at the central memorial of the camp at the site known as “Station Z.” The act formed part of the official remembrance programme marking the liberation anniversary.
The commemoration near Berlin highlighted the historical memory of Greek victims at Sachsenhausen and underscored the importance of preserving national remembrance within broader European commemorative practices. The newly unveiled plaque establishes a permanent point of reference for honouring the Greek prisoners connected to the camp’s history.
