The Ambassador
Amb. Ioannis Ghikas
H.E. Mr. Ioannis Ghikas is a highly experienced career diplomat within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic. He assumed his role as the Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations Office at Geneva in late 2024. Prior to his appointment in Geneva, Ambassador Ghikas served in several key diplomatic capacities, notably as the Ambassador of Greece to Argentina. His extensive career within the Greek diplomatic service includes high-level positions at the central ministry in Athens, as well as multiple postings abroad, where he specialized in bilateral relations, European affairs, and multilateral diplomacy. Throughout his tenure, he has been dedicated to advancing Greece's foreign policy priorities, international law, and strategic cooperation within global governance frameworks.
History
As one of the historic nations of Europe and a long-standing member of the United Nations, Greece has maintained a consistent and active diplomatic footprint in International Geneva. The Permanent Mission serves as Greece's direct link to the UN's European headquarters and numerous international agencies based in the city.The historical and contemporary focus of the Greek Mission in Geneva is deeply tied to the defense of international law, maritime regulations, human rights, and humanitarian affairs. The mission actively participates in the UN Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Given Greece's geographic position and geopolitical interests, the mission plays a significant role in multilateral discussions concerning international migration frameworks, refugee protection, and global health cooperation.
