On 28th January 2025, Ghana’s Ambassador to Austria, Matilda Aku Alomatu Osei-Agyeman, was elected Chairperson of the IAEA board of Governors, a position she will hold until September 2025.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the primary intergovernmental platform for scientific and technological collaboration in the nuclear area. With its headquarters in Vienna, the agency promotes the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear science and technology, contributing to world peace and security, and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The IAEA has two policy-making bodies: the Board of Governors and the yearly General Conference of IAEA Member States. The Board evaluates and offers recommendations to the General Conference on the IAEA's financial accounts, program, and budget. It examines membership applications, approves safeguards agreements, and publishes the IAEA's safety standards. It also appoints the Director General of the IAEA, subject to the approval of the General Conference. The Board typically meets five times a year: in March and June, twice in September (before and after the General Conference), and once in November.

Ambassador Alomatu Osei-Agyeman has served the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for over twenty-five years, holding various positions both domestically and internationally, contributing to Ghana’s bilateral and multilateral engagements.

Prior to taking up the role as Ambassador to Austria, Ambassador Alomatu Osei-Agyeman was the Minister Plenipotentiary and Deputy Ambassador at the Embassy of the Republic of Ghana to the Italian Republic (2023-2024). She served as the Director of the Europe Bureau (2021-2023) and was responsible for the Candidatures Portfolio (2021) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana (MFARI).
