On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the German Federal Foreign Office and the Council of Europe co-hosted a commemorative conference marking 75 years of Germany’s membership in the Council of Europe. Held at the Weltsaal in Berlin, the full-day event brought together leading voices in diplomacy, civil society, and academia.

The conference, titled "75 Years of Germany in the Council of Europe", celebrated the country’s longstanding contribution to European cooperation, democratic resilience, and human rights. Moderated in both English and German, the event featured panel discussions and keynote speeches on topics such as the role of democratic institutions in times of global challenge, the evolution of European human rights law, and Germany’s engagement with multilateralism since joining the Council in 1950.

The conference also emphasized the Council’s ongoing relevance amid today’s geopolitical shifts. Participants underscored the importance of unity among European nations, and how shared values remain central to confronting threats to rule of law and democratic governance.

The event served not only as a retrospective, but as a call for renewed commitment to the Council of Europe’s mission — one that Germany continues to shape through active diplomatic, legal, and civic leadership.
