German Journalists Explore Bulgaria’s Rich Cultural Heritage on Diplomatic Tour
Highlighting Bulgaria’s history, cuisine, and tourism appeal for German audiences
October 31st, 2024From October 6 to 11, five German journalists participated in a study tour of Bulgaria organised by the Bulgarian Embassy in Berlin. The initiative, part of the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ 2024 program for cultural and digital diplomacy, aimed to showcase Bulgaria's rich heritage, including history, cuisine, and tourism potential, to the German public. Journalists represented major German media outlets like Berliner Zeitung and Die Tageszeitung, underscoring the strong media interest in Bulgaria’s offerings.
The group toured historical and cultural landmarks across Bulgaria, visiting Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo, Plovdiv, and Kazanlak. Highlights included UNESCO World Heritage sites, the ancient Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis, and traditional Bulgarian wine tastings. In Veliko Tarnovo, journalists also engaged with Bulgarian tourism leaders and officials at the 19th International Tourism Exhibition, fostering bilateral dialogue on tourism and cultural exchange.
Through visits to cities like Plovdiv, one of Europe’s oldest, and Gabrovo’s Ethnographic Museum, Bulgaria’s efforts to preserve and promote its historical legacy were brought to life. Cultural events like fire-dancing and wine tastings showcased unique Bulgarian traditions, further strengthening diplomatic and cultural ties between the two nations.
The tour was a collaborative success, supported by ministries, local governments, and cultural organizations across Bulgaria. Organized by the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Tourism Office in Berlin, the initiative reflects Bulgaria's commitment to building lasting connections with Germany through cultural exchange, tourism, and shared appreciation of history and heritage.
