French Pianist Vladimir Stoupel Performs in Mauritania with Support from the Mauritanian Embassy in Berlin
A special concert tour celebrates cultural exchange, collaboration with local musicians, and the arrival of a new concert piano
August 01st, 2025On April 19th, 2025, Soviet-born French pianist Vladimir Stoupel gave a landmark concert at the Institut Français de Mauritanie in Nouakchott, with the generous support of the Mauritanian Embassy in Berlin and the French Embassy in Mauritania.
The event marked the official inauguration of a new hybrid concert piano, donated by the Goldberg Foundation in partnership with the Institut Français in Nouakchott. Specially designed to withstand Mauritania’s demanding climate conditions, the instrument represents a major step toward expanding access to high-quality classical music in the region.
Stoupel was joined on stage by his son, violinist Alan Stoupel, in a moving program crafted to highlight the universal emotional power of music beyond cultural and stylistic boundaries.
Outside of the capital, both musicians gave an open-air concert in the north of the country, where they performed in a breathtaking setting. The concert drew an enthusiastic and diverse audience, including local musicians, students, and families, and became a spontaneous celebration of artistic exchange and dialogue. Informal musical encounters with local artists deepened the spirit of collaboration and mutual inspiration.
Reflecting on the experience, Stoupel emphasized the deep emotional resonance he witnessed among audiences and musicians alike, noting the remarkable interest and openness to classical music in Mauritania, particularly among the younger generation.
This initiative stands as a vibrant example of cultural diplomacy in action. With the support of institutions including the Mauritanian Embassy in Berlin and French Embassy in Mauritania, this project not only created unforgettable artistic moments but also helped lay the groundwork for long-term cultural development and connection.
