Franco-German Youth Meeting to Commemorate the First World War
June 16th, 2014
News from Berlin – Between July 31st and August 4th will be held in Alsace the Franco-German youth meeting "100 years after the First World War".
The summer of 2014 marked the beginning of the centenary of the First World War. During this year many commemorative events will take place in many European countries. August 3rd represents a significant Franco-German step in this centennial: 100 years to the day after the declaration of war of the German Empire to France, the President of the French Republic François Hollande and the President of the Federal Republic of Germany Joachim Gauck will meet in Hartmannswillerkopf (Vieil-Armand), in southern Alsace. This place has not been chosen aimlessly, it was the theater of some bloody battles where thousands of young people lost their life.
To commemorate this terrible war, the Franco-German Youth Office (OFAJ) was requested to organize in this particular context a youth meeting. This gathering of 100 participants aged between 16 and 21 years in France and Germany, is realized in cooperation with the German Association Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge and the National Federation of Francas (France).
During the seminar, discussion workshops will be set up around different themes. The youth meeting with the Heads of State on August 3rd will be the highlight of the commemoration days. Participants will have the chance to interact with them and present some art performances.
