Foreign Minister Steinmeier Visits Mongolia

News from Berlin - On Saturday, July 5th German Foreign Minister Steinmeier begins an official two-day visit in Mongolia, to highlight the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The first meeting of the Minister took place yesterday in the capital city of Ulan Bator together with his Mongolian colleague Luvsanvandan Bold.

During the press conference with Bold, Steinmeier mentioned the developments that Mongolia is living through: “We always come here with the highest respect and we recognize the transformations of the past years. We are impressed by the strength of civil society and by the stability of the political responsibilities on this way towards modernization”.

According to what Minister Steinmeier said, in all the 40 years of diplomatic relations the “far neighbors” of Germany and Mongolia have agreed on almost every issue from politics to economy and culture. Examples of this common view are the partnership for raw materials, the opening of a brand new German-Mongolian school and the cultural cooperation that also Steinmeier cites in his speech.

The schedule of the visit of Foreign Minister Steinmeier includes other formal meetings with former Mongolian President Norov Altankhuyag and President of State Elbegdorj. This is the first official trip in the Asian country for Minister Steinmeier and it represents the first visit of a Foreign Minister from Germany since 1996.
