Fête de la Musique 2016
Berlin Celebrates the Beginning of the Summer with an Open-Air Music Festival
June 13th, 2016Every year on June 21st, musicians and bands celebrate the beginning of summer with the open-air music festival. Bands, orchestras, choirs, soloists and DJs perform music from different cultures in public spaces such as public squares and in the streets.
However, the Fête de la Musique is not solely considered a Berlin event. Musicians and music lovers from over 340 cities worldwide, among them 60 European cities come to the city to showcase their musical talents. The festival represents a cultural exchange of lyrical dialogues.
Jack Lang, the French Minister of Culture in Paris in 1982, founded the music festival in the spring of 1995. Since then, the Fête Company has organized the music festival. In the beginning, the festival was a local musical idealism. However, within three decades, it has become a global phenomenon attracting musical enthusiasts, composers and singers from all over the world. Musical pieces from different regions of the world such as the Balkans, Middle East and Asia are performed.
The music festival is 25% financed by the Governing Mayor-Senate Chancellery. Additional funds are and will continue to be provided by the German Lottery Foundation Berlin until 2017.
The Fête de la Musique is one of the highlights in Berlin every year. The festival allows visitors to become acquainted with musical newcomers and form personal relationships. For musicians and composers alike, the festival provides them the opportunity to showcase their talents and musical abilities.
