Exhibition to Celebrate 25 Years of the Austrian Embassy in Berlin
Architecture, Culture and Bilateral Dialogue
February 13th, 2026On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Austrian Embassy in Berlin, an exhibition at the Austrian Cultural Forum Berlin highlights the embassy building itself as a place of diplomatic, cultural, and social exchange. Running from 23 January to 22 April 2026, the exhibition reflects on the embassy as an architectural and symbolic landmark. Designed by the renowned Austrian architect Hans Hollein, the building has, for a quarter of a century, stood as a visible symbol of Austria’s enduring presence in Germany’s capital and of the close partnership between Austria and Germany.
The exhibition focuses on the architectural, functional, and symbolic dimensions of the building and presents a curated selection of contemporary artistic positions that have engaged with the embassy over the years. Works by Ivan Markovic & Katharina Hauke, POLIGONAL, Claudia Larcher, Sinta Werner, and Zara Pfeifer offer multilayered perspectives on the relationship between architecture, space, and function. These artistic contributions are complemented by the architectural model, original drawings by Hans Hollein, and photographic documentation of the building.
Germany, and Berlin in particular, plays a central role in this context. As Germany’s political and cultural capital, Berlin provides both the physical and conceptual setting in which the Austrian Embassy has evolved into a dynamic platform for bilateral dialogue. In close interaction with German institutions, cultural practitioners, and the wider public, the embassy building has become a space where diplomatic engagement, cultural exchange, and architectural reflection intersect.
The cooperation with the Architecture Center Vienna further underscores the international scope of the exhibition while highlighting Germany’s importance as a key partner in the European discourse on architecture and contemporary art. By hosting the exhibition in Berlin and making it accessible to the public, Germany contributes significantly to the visibility of Austrian architecture and contemporary artistic practice, thereby strengthening the shared cultural space between the two countries. The exhibition thus serves not only as a retrospective of 25 years of the Austrian Embassy in Berlin, but also as an outlook on the continued deepening of Austrian-German relations.
