MBABANE – The Eswatini Theatre Club has been awarded a grant of €21,700 by the German Embassy in Pretoria to refurbish its main foyer and create a grassroots performance space. The initiative aims to strengthen the Theatre Club’s role within Eswatini’s cultural and performing arts landscape.

The funding arrives within the first year of a new committee taking office, composed predominantly of artists and cultural practitioners. Under their leadership, the Theatre Club has experienced a surge in activity, hosting film screenings, music concerts, dance performances, and theatre programs. The planned renovations will include the installation of essential sound and lighting systems, creating a flexible, accessible environment for both performers and audiences.

In a statement, Vice President Sizo Hlophe explained that the upgrades are designed to address the shortage of dedicated performance venues in Mbabane, fostering cultural exchange and supporting emerging local talent. “As an institution, we recognise the importance of providing a platform for artists to perform, network and grow their audiences. Establishing a grassroots performance space is a vital step in this direction,” Hlophe said.

Renovations began on Monday, June 23, 2025, and are expected to last three months. While some areas will have restricted access during this period, the Theatre Club remains committed to maintaining partial continuity in its accessible facilities. The project aligns with broader regional and international initiatives, such as the Market Theatre Foundation in Johannesburg and New York Theatre Workshop, which have received funding to enhance community outreach and performance spaces.

The Eswatini Theatre Club aims to act as a window into the country’s expanding cultural landscape, connecting local artists with regional and global arts communities. Partners and interested organizations are invited to contact the Theatre Club at theatreclubmba@gmail.com for collaboration or facility inquiries.
