Embassy Visit Enriches Canisius College Students’ Understanding of Japanese Culture
Students Engage with Japan’s Diplomacy and Calligraphy at the Embassy
April 23rd, 2024March 1 and March 12, 2024, marked special days for students at Canisius College in Berlin, as groups from the school visited the embassy of Japan to deepen their knowledge of the Japanese language and culture. Canisius College, a private school known for its strong commitment to international exchange, offers Japanese as a fourth foreign language from the 9th grade, providing students with valuable skills to operate globally in the future.
During the first visit on March 1, sixteen students from grades 7 to 10 participated, followed by a second group of nine students from grades 11 and 12 on March 12. These visits were designed to enhance the students’ understanding of Japan’s foreign policy, the roles and responsibilities of an embassy, and the Japanese educational system.
One of the highlights of their embassy experience was learning about exchange programs available to students wishing to study in Japan. This opportunity aligns with Canisius College’s goal of preparing students for international environments by exposing them to real-world diplomatic settings and international educational opportunities.
Moreover, the students were introduced to the art of Japanese calligraphy, an essential aspect of traditional Japanese culture. Despite newcomers to this art form, the students successfully wrote the Japanese character for “friend,” showcasing their enthusiasm and quick learning. This hands-on activity taught them about Japanese writing and symbolically reflected the growing friendship and cultural bridge between the students and Japan.
