On 14 February, the Embassy of Belgium in Vienna – Permanent Representation to the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency – attended the opening ceremony marking the designation of Trenčín as European Capital of Culture 2026. The event marked the beginning of a year-long programme of cultural activities and international partnerships celebrating creativity and cooperation across Europe.

Trenčín becomes the second Slovak city to hold the European Capital of Culture title, following Košice in 2013. In his opening address, the Mayor of Trenčín, Mr. Richard Rybníček, highlighted the significance of shared European values, including freedom, democracy, and tolerance, as guiding principles for the year ahead.

The city of Trenčín is renowned for its striking castle overlooking the urban landscape, its picturesque historic centre, and its recently renovated synagogue. Throughout the opening weekend, a wide range of cultural events took place, featuring artists from Trenčín as well as from across Slovakia and Europe. Visitors were also able to enjoy an impressive light show set against the backdrop of Trenčín Castle.

A delegation from the Belgian city of Leuven participated in the opening celebrations in Trenčín. Leuven will hold the title of European Capital of Culture in Belgium in 2030. The future programme is expected to focus on themes such as innovation, climate transition, and shared values, promising another significant cultural milestone.

The Embassy of Belgium extended its best wishes to Trenčín for a successful and inspiring European Capital of Culture year in 2026. Such initiatives strengthen international connections and contribute to deeper mutual understanding, demonstrating the enduring importance of cultural diplomacy.
