El Rescate: Honoring José Arturo Castellanos at the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut
A moving tribute to the Salvadoran diplomat who saved thousands during the Holocaust
July 01st, 2025On May 22nd, 2025, the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (IAI) in Berlin hosted a unique cultural event titled “El Rescate – Die Rettung”, a film-concert dedicated to the memory of José Arturo Castellanos, a Salvadoran diplomat who helped save over 13,000 Jewish lives during the Holocaust. This moving homage brought together history, music, and cinema to honor one of the lesser-known heroes of World War II.
Organized by the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut in collaboration with the Embassy of El Salvador, the event reflected the powerful intersection of cultural diplomacy and historical memory. The evening featured the screening of the documentary El Rescate, directed by Castellanos’ grandsons, Álvaro and Boris Castellanos, accompanied by a live performance from the Rescue Latin Chamber Orchestra from Montreal. This unique blend of visuals and sound offered the audience an immersive experience into the life and legacy of a man often referred to as “the Oskar Schindler of El Salvador.”
The program opened with remarks from Dr. Barbara Göbel, Director of the IAI, and a special message from Felix Klein, Germany’s Federal Commissioner for Jewish Life and the Fight against Antisemitism. Their words underscored the importance of remembering the moral courage of diplomats like Castellanos, who used his position to issue Salvadoran nationality certificates to Jewish families during one of history’s darkest chapters.
The musical performance featured a rich combination of Afro-Cuban classical elements and Latin jazz, performed live by violin, flute, cello, piano, bass, and percussion. This fusion of cultures not only enriched the narrative but also symbolized the universal values of solidarity and resistance against oppression.
Beyond being a cultural experience, the event served as a testament to the role of Latin American diplomacy in global humanitarian efforts. It highlighted how embassies, cultural institutes, and artists collaborate to keep alive stories that transcend borders and generations.
In this spirit, “El Rescate – Die Rettung” stands as a shining example of how cultural remembrance fosters diplomatic dialogue, mutual understanding, and the defense of human rights in today’s interconnected world.
