Ecuadorian Ambassador Holds Lecture on Latin American Integration
In Berlin, the Ecuadorian Ambassador to Germany held a lecture to discuss Latin American Integration in relation to the European Union (EU).
December 18th, 2014In his speech Ambassador Jurado stressed that although European integration provides an important lesson for Latin America, it is also time for Europe to learn from Latin America. Ambassador Jurado said that Latin America has become a territory of peace and sovereignty of the people. Ambassador Jurado pointed out that Latin America was the birthplace of such avant-garde concepts like universal citizenship and the primacy of the individual over the state. It is these concepts that European and Europeans in general should consider learning about.
Ambassador Jurado went on to explain the new regional financial structure in Latin America. This structure creates, from a Development Bank, a common reserve fund and compensation system for company’s involved in international trade. Ambassador Jurado also explained the numerous regional integration organisations in Latin America: CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States), UNASUR (Union of South American Nations) and ALBA (Bolivarian Alliance for the peoples of Our America).
Ambassador Jurado did warn against the globalisation of the world’s financial markets without sufficient control mechanisms. "Today we hear much talk about globalisation, but it is a globalisation that seeks no citizen of the world, but only global consumers; no world society, but, rather only world markets; and can destroy countries without adequate control and governance mechanisms," warned Ambassador Jurado.
Ambassador Jurado’s lecture was held as part of a lecture series. The Argentinian, Mexican and Brazilin Ambassadors to Germany also held lectures on a range of issues concerning Latin America and the EU.
