The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) brought two of its flagship publications to Berlin recently, presenting them at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection in a visit that combined economic research with high-level policy dialogue.

According to a LinkedIn post by EBRD media adviser Ksenia Yakustidi, the discussion was led by Chief Economist Beata Javorcik, who highlighted the impact of long-term demographic change on global and regional economies. Javorcik pointed to declining birth rates, ageing populations, and shrinking workforces as structural trends reshaping economic growth across EBRD regions, noting that while immigration, automation, and artificial intelligence may ease some pressures, they are unlikely to fully offset them.

The EBRD team was hosted by Benjamin Weigert, described in the post as Director General of Economic Policy at the Federal Ministry, and his team. On the same visit, Javorcik and her colleagues met with journalists from Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Börsen-Zeitung, and Deutsche Welle to discuss the bank's latest Regional Economic Update, which examines the economic impact of the Middle East conflict on EBRD economies.

The Berlin presentation reflects the EBRD's continued engagement with European policymakers on long-term structural economic challenges. By connecting demographic transformation with geopolitical risk analysis, the discussion highlighted how economic policy debates in Berlin increasingly intersect with broader global developments.
