Diplomacy Across Borders: The Americas in Berlin, London, Geneva and Vienna
Four Cities, Four Stories of Cultural Exchange
September 29th, 2026The Americas’ diplomatic and cultural presence across Europe has been particularly visible in recent weeks. From historical commemorations and national celebrations to cinema, music and gastronomy, events in Berlin, London, Geneva and Vienna offer different ways to experience Latin American culture and connect with the region’s diplomatic and international communities. Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Peru are represented through programmes that bring national traditions and contemporary cultural life into a wider European setting.
While some of these activities focus on important moments of national and shared history, others use film, music and food to introduce audiences to different aspects of life and culture in the Americas. Embassies and diplomatic missions play an important role in these exchanges, often working together with cultural institutions, international organisations and local partners. Recent programmes range from a joint Argentine-Chilean commemoration in Berlin and Mexican cultural activities in London and Geneva to Peru’s participation in Vienna’s international coffee scene. Together, they reflect the variety of ways in which countries from the Americas maintain a cultural presence abroad, meet new audiences and create opportunities for exchange between diplomatic representatives, cultural communities and the wider public.
Argentine and Chilean Embassies Honour San Martín in Berlin
A shared chapter of South American history brought Argentine and Chilean diplomatic representatives together in Berlin on 18 August 2026. The conference and commemorative ceremony, titled San Martín nos une, marked the 176th anniversary of the death of General José de San Martín and examined different stages of his life and work. The activity was presided over by Argentina’s Ambassador to Germany, Betina Pasquali de Fonseca, accompanied by Chilean Ambassador Jorge Sandrock. argentina and chile
Held at Berlin’s Ibero-American Institute, the conference followed San Martín’s trajectory from his years of education and military service in Spain to his activities in the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, campaigns in Chile and period as Protector of Peru. Presentations were delivered by defence representatives from Argentina, Chile and Peru, giving the commemoration a wider regional dimension.
Following the conference, participants gathered at the monument to San Martín for a commemorative ceremony attended by diplomatic representatives, German federal defence authorities and members of the Bundeswehr. Argentina’s ambassador addressed San Martín’s military and political legacy, while the participation of members of the Bundeswehr Music Corps added a ceremonial musical element.
The Berlin gathering placed a historical figure whose life connects several Latin American countries at the centre of a contemporary diplomatic encounter. By involving representatives from Argentina, Chile and Peru alongside German institutions, the programme created a space where historical memory became a point of contact between Latin American and European participants rather than remaining solely a national commemoration.
Mexican Embassy Opens a Window onto Contemporary Film in London
Mexico’s cultural presence in London is extending to the screen through a series of Mexican short-film presentations organised by the Embassy of Mexico in the United Kingdom, the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica and Instituto Cervantes London. The programme presents contemporary Mexican filmmaking through three free screenings, with the first two taking place in August and the final screening scheduled for 12 November. mexico
The series was designed around different perspectives within Mexico’s film landscape. Its August programme included an LGBTQ+ screening on 19 August and a selection centred on women pioneers on 25 August. The November programme will turn to horror, offering another entry point into Mexican short-film production. According to the embassy’s programme, the initiative brings together work by emerging voices and established directors.
The screenings also demonstrate cooperation between diplomatic, educational and cultural organisations. Rather than presenting cinema solely within an embassy setting, the Mexican mission is working with Instituto Cervantes London and a Mexican cinematographic institution to place the films before audiences in an established international cultural environment.
Film provides a particularly direct form of cultural exchange because audiences encounter a country through stories, visual language and individual creative perspectives. In this case, the programme does not present a single image of contemporary Mexico. Its different thematic screenings instead introduce multiple voices and genres, while the partnership between the embassy and cultural institutions creates a continuing platform for Mexican filmmakers and British audiences to meet through cinema.
Mexican Mission Celebrates Independence Through Music in Geneva
Mexico’s diplomatic community in Geneva brought music into its Independence celebrations with a gala concert at the Conservatoire de Genève. The Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva organised the event as part of the country’s national festivities, combining a musical programme with a diplomatic reception attended by around 250 people. mexico 2
The concert, supported by CEMEX and “Crescendo con la Música”, featured artists from the foundation led by Mexican pianist Jorge Viladoms. The programme brought together works by Mexican composer Manuel M. Ponce and compositions by Schubert, Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Villa-Lobos, Piazzolla and Richard Strauss, performed in arrangements for piano, cello, soprano and guitar.
Ambassador Francisca E. Méndez Escobar opened the occasion, which was followed by the official Grito ceremony. The reception also introduced other elements of Mexican culture, including artisanal “Leles” dolls and a tequila tasting. Attendees included permanent representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, officials from international organisations, Mexicans working within those organisations, members of the Actifs association and the wider Mexican community.
In Geneva’s international environment, the celebration brought together diplomatic protocol, music, craftsmanship and community participation. The setting allowed a national anniversary to become an occasion for interaction among international officials, diplomats and members of the Mexican community, while the concert placed Mexican cultural expression within a broader international musical repertoire.
Peruvian Embassy Brings Coffee Diplomacy to Vienna
Peru introduced Vienna audiences to the diversity of its coffee production during the Vienna Coffee Festival, held from 11 to 13 September 2026. PROMPERÚ participated in the international event at Marx Halle, presenting Peruvian coffee to visitors, roasters, industry specialists and businesses. Its participation was enabled through institutional cooperation between PROMPERÚ and the Embassy of Peru in Austria. peru
The programme focused not only on coffee as a product but also on the geographical and climatic diversity behind its production. Peru’s different growing regions, altitudes, soils and microclimates contribute to distinct sensory characteristics, giving visitors an opportunity to connect the drink with the landscapes and production environments from which it originates.
A central part of the programme was a professional cupping session on 12 September. Participants could compare different Peruvian coffees and explore their individual aromas, acidity, body and flavour profiles. The tasting also provided information about the origins of the coffees, cultivation regions and the diversity of Peruvian production.
Vienna’s long-established association with coffee provided a relevant setting for this exchange. Peru’s participation connected producers and national institutions with an international community of coffee professionals and consumers, bringing together cultural knowledge and commercial interaction. Through tasting and discussion, visitors encountered Peruvian coffee not simply as an export but as a product shaped by regional environments and local production traditions, while cooperation between PROMPERÚ and the Peruvian Embassy gave the initiative an institutional link between Peru and Austria.
Cultural Diplomacy Across Four Cities
Together, these events show how embassies and diplomatic institutions can create opportunities for cultural exchange in very different settings. From shared historical memory and contemporary cinema to music and coffee culture, Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Peru have brought different aspects of the Americas to audiences across Europe. The activities in Berlin, London, Geneva and Vienna also demonstrate how cooperation with cultural institutions, international organisations and local partners can extend diplomacy beyond official meetings and create direct connections with wider communities.
