DPM Heng Swee Keat In Berlin Hopes That Singapore Becomes A “Gateway” To Renewed Growth

The Singapore Embassy was pleased to host Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat in Berlin on a working visit, celebrating 60 years of bilateral relations between Singapore and Germany.

During his visit to Germany from January 26 to 31, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Heng spoke at the 16th WELT Economic Summit, discussing significant issues facing the global economy and the collaborative potential between Singapore and Germany to foster new economic opportunities. He highlighted this by stating:

“Germany and Singapore can deepen our partnership, to build on our respective strengths. [...] The Singapore-German Chamber of Commerce and the German Centre in Singapore will be useful for companies venturing out.”

DPM Heng also met several German politicians, including Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck, Head of the Federal Chancellery and Federal Minister for Special Tasks Wolfgang Schmidt, and Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Chairman Friedrich Merz. They reaffirmed the strong and enduring bilateral relationship, and anticipated growing connections under the Singapore-Germany Strategic Partnership, signed on November 17th 2024.

DPM Heng also attended several meetings with business executives, including roundtables hosted by Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) and the CDU Wirtschaftsrat (Economic Council). During these talks, he emphasised Singapore’s role as a potential strategic partner for German enterprises interested in the ASEAS area, and highlighted the possibility for expanded collaboration in digitisation, sustainability, and finance sectors.
