From June 10 to 17, 2025, a delegation from the renowned University of Maroua in Cameroon visited Germany to strengthen academic cooperation and explore new avenues for collaboration in research, education, and historical dialogue. During their stay, the delegation was welcomed by several leading institutions, including Humboldt University of Berlin, the Technical University of Berlin, the University of Saarland, and the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin.

The meetings focused on potential joint projects, student exchange programs, and funding opportunities such as Erasmus+. Key areas of interest included natural sciences, social sciences, agriculture, and economics, all with the goal of building sustainable, mutually beneficial partnerships.

A particularly important topic was historical memory and postcolonial justice. At the University of Freiburg, in collaboration with the Africa Centre for Transregional Research, the delegation was introduced to ongoing work around the repatriation of human remains belonging to the Maka community, preserved in Germany since 1907. These discussions opened a meaningful dialogue on ethical and scientific collaboration in processes of historical reparation.

The visit reflects the University of Maroua’s commitment to internationalization and expanding its academic network through partnerships with high-level European institutions. Guided by its motto, Science, Wisdom, and Service, the university aims not only to enhance educational quality but to foster intercultural dialogue based on respect and equity.

For German institutions, the collaboration offers a valuable opportunity to enrich academic programs and engage more deeply with African perspectives in research and education. This kind of academic diplomacy also contributes to historical reconciliation, addressing sensitive topics such as cultural restitution.

In the coming months, new agreements are expected to emerge around student mobility, joint research, and academic publications. The discussions held during this visit lay the groundwork for long-term cooperation that combines scientific innovation with shared historical responsibility.

In summary, the University of Maroua’s mission to Germany represents a bridge between continents — one built on academic cooperation, intercultural understanding, and a collective commitment to ethical progress.
