News from Berlin. The Brazilian Embassy in Brazil presents the Paquetá Youth Orchestra from Rio de Janeiro, directed by Bruno Jardim.

The programme consists of works from the little known – in Berlin – composers such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, Marcello Caldi and Lorenzo Fernandez.

The 20 members of the orchestra range in age from 12 to 23 and practise normally on the small island of Paquetá, just a kilometre long and free of cars, pertaining to the megacity of Rio de Janiero.

Well known pianist in Brazil, Josiane Kevorkian and her husband José Lavrador have successfully promoted the talent of these young people in their “Casa de Artes”. The music and educational project also aims to help children from lower economically able backgrounds integrate socially.

The event takes place at the St Jacobi Church, Berlin, Orianenstraße 123. Entry is free but donations to support the choir are accepted.
