On Monday, March 30, 2026, Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa to Berlin, for a joint press conference, where both leaders engaged in discussions on Syria’s reconstruction, economic development, and the situation of Syrians residing in Germany

During the press conference, Chancellor Merz referred to a figure indicating that approximately 80 percent of Syrians currently living in Germany could return to Syria within the next three years, noting that this was expressed as President al-Sharaa’s wish. On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Merz clarified that the figure had been cited by the Syrian president and acknowledged the complexity of such a return. President al-Sharaa subsequently stated in London that the figure did not originate from him.

The leaders focused on Syria’s reconstruction, including the rebuilding of infrastructure, hospitals, schools, and institutions, and discussed ways in which Syrians residing in Germany might contribute to these efforts. Both emphasized the importance of cooperation between Germany and Syria to support sustainable development and recovery.

Chancellor Merz highlighted the contributions of Syrian professionals in Germany, including doctors and engineers, noting that their experience could play a valuable role both in Germany and in Syria’s reconstruction. President al-Sharaa also stressed the potential of Syrians in Germany to serve as a bridge between the two countries.

The press conference underscored Germany and Syria’s shared commitment to collaboration on reconstruction, economic engagement, and community participation. While the 80 percent figure remains a matter of clarification, the discussions reflected mutual interest in fostering constructive cooperation and supporting Syrians both in Germany and in their homeland.
