On October 19, 2025, the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Myanmar in Vienna hosted the annual ASEAN Family Day, bringing together diplomats, families, and friends from the ASEAN Embassies and Permanent Missions based in Vienna. The vibrant event took place in the scenic Donaupark, one of Vienna’s most beloved green spaces, under the crisp autumn sky.

The celebration was organized under the chairmanship of Ambassador U Min Thein of Myanmar, who currently serves as the Chair of the ASEAN-Vienna Committee (AVC). In his opening remarks, Ambassador U Min Thein emphasized the enduring friendship among ASEAN member states and highlighted the importance of fostering community spirit beyond formal diplomatic settings. Representing the city of Vienna, District Mayor Ernst Nevrivy of Donaustadt warmly welcomed the participants and commended ASEAN’s continued engagement with local communities, calling the event “a testament to Vienna’s spirit of openness and multicultural harmony.”

Following the formal speeches, the Donaupark transformed into a lively space of laughter, music, and cultural exchange. Diplomats, staff members, and their families took part in various sports competitions, traditional dances, and singing performances that showcased the rich cultural heritage of the ten ASEAN nations. The highlight of the afternoon was undoubtedly the ASEAN food fair, where each embassy presented signature dishes from their respective countries — from spicy satay and fragrant curries to sweet tropical desserts — delighting guests with a feast of regional flavors.

Beyond its festive atmosphere, the ASEAN Family Day carried significant diplomatic meaning. It served as an informal yet powerful platform for people-to-people diplomacy, reinforcing the bonds not only between ASEAN members but also between ASEAN and Austria. By engaging families and encouraging direct interaction among diplomats and local officials, the event reflected the association’s guiding principle of unity in diversity — celebrating distinct cultures while nurturing a collective ASEAN identity abroad.

For the ASEAN community in Vienna, this gathering has become more than an annual tradition; it is a moment to reaffirm shared values of cooperation, friendship, and inclusivity. The Myanmar Embassy’s leadership in organizing this year’s celebration underscored its commitment to promoting regional solidarity and enhancing ASEAN’s visibility in Europe.

As the sun set over the Donaupark, participants exchanged warm farewells, already looking forward to the next ASEAN Family Day. Events like these illustrate how cultural diplomacy, grounded in mutual respect and conviviality, can build bridges across nations — not in negotiation rooms, but in the joy of shared experiences, food, and friendship.
