On September 14th, the Embassy of Costa Rica in Germany brought together over 60 Costa Ricans at our diplomatic mission to sing our National Anthem and celebrate our Independence. This joyous occasion filled our hearts as we gathered as a family to honor this special date with patriotism, joy, humor, and delicious Costa Rican cuisine.

Costa Rica's Independence Day is celebrated on September 15th, marking the moment in 1821 when the nation declared its freedom from Spanish rule. The festivities begin on the evening of September 14th with the "Desfile de Faroles" (Parade of Lanterns), where children carry handmade lanterns symbolizing the arrival of the message of liberty. This tradition pays homage to Dolores Bedoya, who famously delivered the news of independence to Guatemala.

On September 15th, Costa Ricans participate in patriotic parades, proudly waving their national flag and enjoying traditional dishes such as "casado" and tamales. The celebration culminates with the singing of the national anthem at 6 p.m., a moment that unites everyone in a shared sense of pride and belonging.

Independence Day is not just a day of celebration; it is also a time for reflection on the values of unity and respect for history. The gathering at the embassy exemplified these sentiments, as attendees shared stories, laughter, and a deep appreciation for their homeland.
