A parliamentary evening at the Embassy of Canada in Berlin brought together policymakers and industry leaders for a discussion centred on digital sovereignty and secure communications. The event highlighted the growing strategic importance of digital infrastructure in shaping state resilience and international cooperation.

Canadian Ambassador Vera Alexander described the gathering in a LinkedIn post as an opportunity to exchange views with BlackBerry CEO John J. Giamatteo and Dr. Christoph Erdmann, SVP and Managing Director of Secusmart, on their work in Germany and on the evolving role of secure digital systems. The Ambassador characterised digital sovereignty and secure communications as increasingly central to national capability in a highly interconnected and vulnerable digital environment.

In a separate LinkedIn post, Dr. Erdmann reflected on the significance of the embassy setting, arguing that digital sovereignty has moved beyond theoretical debate into a concrete test of state functionality. He emphasised that questions of autonomy, resilience, and operational capacity are now continuously negotiated between public institutions and private-sector technology actors, particularly under conditions of geopolitical uncertainty.

The Berlin discussion illustrates how digital sovereignty has become a defining theme in contemporary diplomacy, where technology, security, and policy intersect. The exchange at the Canadian Embassy underscores the deepening Germany–Canada cooperation in addressing shared challenges linked to secure communication and digital resilience.
