Burkina Faso Embassy Celebrated Africa Day 2024 in Vienna
Burkina Faso shone with a fusion of culture, cuisine, and education
July 18th, 2024On 27 May, 2024, in line with other resident African Diplomatic Missions, the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Burkina Faso in Vienna participated in the celebration of Africa Day, initiated by the African Group at the Vienna International Centre.
Held under the annual theme of the African Union: "The Year of Education: Educating a Worthy African of the 21st Century," the event featured an opening ceremony, tastings of African dishes, and musical performances.
The opening ceremony included speeches, one of which was delivered by Mr. Mohammed Belhocine, African Union Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and another by Mr. Philbert Abaka Johnson, Permanent Representative of Ghana and President of the African Group in Vienna. In their addresses, they acknowledged the crucial role of education in better addressing Africa's specific development needs in line with environmental and sustainability standards.
The Embassy of Burkina Faso in Vienna actively participated by offering tastings of Burkinabe dishes, including fonio and tô, as well as natural juices made from hibiscus (bissap) and ginger. Additionally, there was an exhibition of Burkinabe products, particularly shea butter and its derivatives such as soaps, ointments, and balms.
As for artistic performances, the Vienna International Centre resonated with traditional African music provided by four African countries: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Kenya, and Morocco. Burkina Faso's highly remarkable performance was delivered by the group of the famous Burkinabe balafon musician, Mamadou Diabate.
