Bulgarian Embassy in London Celebrates Liberation Day and Historic Anniversaries
Reception highlights UK–Bulgaria ties and shared historical connections

The Embassy of Bulgaria in the United Kingdom hosted an official reception in London to mark the 148th anniversary of the Liberation Day of Bulgaria and the restoration of Bulgarian statehood. This year’s commemoration held particular significance as it also marked 150 years since the April Uprising, a defining moment in Bulgaria’s national history. The event brought together a wide range of guests from political, diplomatic, and cultural spheres, reflecting the strong and evolving relationship between Bulgaria and the United Kingdom.
The reception was attended by representatives of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, and other government institutions, alongside members of the diplomatic corps, the Bulgarian diaspora, and representatives from business, academia, and civil society. Among the distinguished guests were James Asser, Philip Smith, John Whittingdale, and Alistair Harrison. Their presence underscored the importance of parliamentary and diplomatic engagement in strengthening bilateral relations.
A special highlight of the evening was the attendance of Francis Gladstone, whose great-grandfather William Ewart Gladstone was a prominent supporter of the Bulgarian cause in the 19th century. The event opened with the performance of the national anthems of Bulgaria and the United Kingdom, followed by addresses from Tihomir Stoytchev, James Asser, and Lord Philip Smith, who highlighted the historical ties and contemporary cooperation between the two countries.
Beyond its commemorative purpose, the reception illustrated the role of cultural diplomacy in reinforcing historical memory while fostering modern partnerships. By connecting past solidarity with present-day cooperation, such events contribute to strengthening political dialogue, economic collaboration, and people-to-people ties.
