British Embassy Vienna welcomed global arbitration leaders for the annual reception
April 03rd, 2026Earlier this week, the British Embassy Vienna had the pleasure of welcoming more than 100 arbitration practitioners, in-house counsel, academics, and future dispute-resolution specialists from over 26 jurisdictions to the Residence of the British Ambassador in Vienna for the annual CMS Evening Reception, held on the occasion of the 33rd Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot.
The reception brought together a distinguished and international group of participants representing a broad range of professional and academic backgrounds within the field of international arbitration and dispute resolution. Held during one of the most significant weeks in the international arbitration calendar, the event provided an opportunity to recognise the continued importance of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot as a leading educational initiative and a valuable forum for professional exchange. The Embassy was pleased to host this annual gathering in Vienna, a city that continues to play an important role in the global arbitration community.
Together with CMS Dispute Resolution and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb), the British Embassy Vienna marked one of the world’s most important educational events in international commercial arbitration. The Vis Moot continues to serve as a respected platform for the development of future legal professionals and dispute-resolution specialists, while also supporting international dialogue and strengthening cooperation in rules-based trade. The event reflected the shared commitment of all participating institutions to promoting excellence, professional development, and international engagement within the arbitration community.
This year’s reception also highlighted the United Kingdom’s forward-looking Modern Industrial Strategy, a 10-year plan aimed at boosting innovation, investment, and global competitiveness. Within this framework, Professional and Business Services have been identified as one of eight high-growth priority sectors. Legal and dispute-resolution services are recognised as a strategic national asset, with English and Welsh law continuing to underpin a significant share of international commercial contracts and arbitrations worldwide. In this context, the United Kingdom’s ambition remains clear: to continue serving as the world’s most trusted adviser to global industry and as a leader in modern, efficient, and internationally respected dispute resolution.
Acknowledgement was also given to Karollus-Bruner Daniela and Guy Pendell of the CMS Dispute Resolution Group, Cristen Bauer of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb), and Judith Knieper of UNCITRAL for their insightful contributions and for their support for excellence and innovation in the arbitration community.
The reception underscored the importance of the Vis Moot as a globally respected forum for legal education, international exchange, and the continued development of arbitration and dispute-resolution practice.
