Bridging Between Cultures, Countries and Traditions Through Drama
April 04th, 2016Attracting people who seek cultural exchange and opportunity to learn about life in the form of drama, the English Theater Berlin and International Performing Arts Center allows non-German speaker to connect with other individuals. The company only presents plays in English the lingua franca of the 21st century.
English Theater Berlin was founded by Bernd Hoffmeister in 2005, but was later re-launched as the International Performing Arts Centre in 2012. At the heart of the company is the idea that it should “bridge between cultures, countries and traditions”. The playhouse and performing center entertains and educates through an extensive assortment of in-house and international production, performances by Berlin based artists, and cultural as well as drama workshops.
The theatre’s upcoming production The Most Unsatisfied Town written by Amy Evans, will premiere on Friday 7th of April. The performance resonates with issues relevant to today’s Berlin and Europe by following the story of its protagonist, Laurence, and his struggle as an immigrant in Berlin. The play is based on the true story of Oury Jalloh, an asylum seeker from Sierra Leone who deceased in a fire while at the custody of Dessau’s police on January 7, 2005. The case of Oury’s death received international coverage, highlighting the greater need of justice for immigrants and asylum seekers worldwide. Amy Evans is an American writer whose work encompasses racial, gender and social justice thematic. Evans’ play offers new narratives between two worlds, encouraging people from different cultures to meet and take notice of each other.
